Why do I do this work?

When I was about eight, I went grocery shopping with my mother at the old Food Fair in Santa Clara, CA. I remember seeing a man with Down syndrome, maybe in his fifties, walking the aisles with his elderly mother. For the first time, I understood what it meant for someone with special needs to rely completely on another person—and I sensed that this mother would not outlive her son. I had no idea what their broader support system looked like, but I found myself wondering who would care for him when she no longer could.

That moment stayed with me. Of course, as a child, there was nothing I could do to help families like theirs. But after a long career in Silicon Valley, I was fortunate enough to retire early, and I realized I finally had the chance to make a difference. Becoming a licensed professional fiduciary is my way of offering the support I once wished I could give: the reassurance that someone will be there to look out for vulnerable adults when their loved ones are gone.
